Remembering Pierre Kermorvant, Joint founder of Morlaix-Truro Twinning who died aged 93, in January '22.
Catherine Paul (former présidente of Morlaix-Truro Twinning) has sent us a copy of a tribute to Pierre Kermorvant, who died in January at the age of 93. Her original article was sent to the newspaper in Morlaix, which I believe published an article. This is an abridged version of Catherine’s article:
Pierre Kermorvant founded the Morlaix-Truro Twinning Association in 1979, together with Dr Cléach who was then Mayor of Morlaix.
For many years he taught at the Lycée de Morlaix. He had married quite young, and with his wife Nadie he had spent time studying in London while she worked in a shop. While still a boy, during the second world war he used his language skills to be an intermediary between some English parachutists who had crashed in a field and the Breton family which was sheltering them.
Before the Twinning was established, Pierre took groups of pupils on exchange visits to Truro, organised by the Morlaix Chambre de Commerce et d’ Industrie. On one occasion 250 young people flew from Ploujean and landed in Cornwall at a military base.
Then, in 1979 the official Morlaix-Truro Twinning was established, and there followed many visits by different groups – the firemen, the Ramblers - as well as the exchanges we are familiar with today, with the journey done by Brittany Ferries. In 2004, the Morlaix side was enlarged to include the Pays de Morlaix.
As well as encouraging social activities and exchange visits for the Twinning members, Pierre instituted the English classes which continue today and are held in both Morlaix and St Martin-des-Champs.
Pierre was a man full of good humour, always impeccably turned out, who played a vital role in the development of the Twinning links between Morlaix and Truro.
Margaret George
Secretary, Truro-Morlaix Twinning Association
Remembering Connie Fozzard
Connie sadly passed away in February '21, aged 88. She built a highly successful career as a consultant gynaecologist, and long after retirement she continued to travel to London to lecture on her specialist subject. Connie was appointed to the BMA Council and also to a Government Standing Committee. She served on both Carrick District and Truro City Councils becoming Mayor of Truro in 2003. She was extremely passionate about the causes she believed in and fought hard to achieve change.
Connie's association with Truro-Morlaix Twinning commenced initially as a representative of the City Council and then she continued as a member until the present day. As Mayor of Truro she addressed both Truro and Morlaix contingents on the occasion of the visit of the Morlaix twinners to Truro in August 2003 (see photo). She became a TMTA Committee member and greatly supported the association over the years. Connie enjoyed her ongoing participation in the Twinning and loved whenever she could to practice her fluent French.
Remembrance Day November 2020
In Truro, Remembrance Day events and services this year were by invitation only, due to the Covid-19 national lockdown restrictions. The main service outside Truro Cathedral was streamed online for people to watch at home. The Royal British Legion held a private ceremony to lay its wreaths at the war memorial in Boscawen Street. Alison Mandeville laid a wreath at the war memorial on behalf of the Truro Morlaix Twinning Association, prior to the Royal British Legion ceremony.

Six French Merchant Seamen who perished near Falmouth in WW1, remembered at Falmouth Cemetery on 9th November 2019.
On a damp and windy afternoon on Saturday 9th November, local history enthusiasts led a group of 20 people around a selection of war graves in Falmouth Cemetery. Glyn Winchester, Tony Casey and Terry Hedge told the stories of the people buried there.
Amongst the international war graves highlighted during the walk were those of six French merchant seamen. They were members of the crew of the cargo ship the 'SS Ango' which was torpedoed off Falmouth on November 26th 1917. The 'Ango' was a French registered cargo ship on passage to Brazil. She was heading to Falmouth to join the regular Mediterranean convoy as far as Gibraltar. On that fateful morning she was hit by a torpedo from the submarine 'UB80', six nautical miles south east of Falmouth.
French war graves are indicated by a low stone cross with a bronze plaque bearing the words 'Mort Pour La France'. After the First World War, when Britain adopted the poppy as its symbol of remembrance, the French adopted the cornflower – known popularly as the 'bleuet'.
Until recently these graves had been badly overgrown with brambles but, thanks to the efforts of the cemetery maintenance team, these have now been cleared. One of the walk’s leaders, Tony Casey, was able to lay 'bleuets' on each of their graves. The victims were Louis Goleanach, Yves Le Bonniec, Corentin Gabillic, Henri Mazo, Abel Vanderkerknare and Louis Saliou.

40th Anniversary Visit to Truro - Article from West Briton 30th May '19
Data Protection and Truro-Pays de Morlaix Twinning Association
Policy Document Organisation and Mission
Truro-Pays de Morlaix Twinning Association (TMTA) exists to facilitate communication and visits between residents in the area around Truro and those in Pays de Morlaix. To achieve that mission, it needs to collect and use personal information about its members, and those of the corresponding members in France. TMTA is a ‘Voluntary Association’ rather that a company or a charity, so its administration is minimal, and its data protection requirements are therefore relatively simple.
Personal data collected by TMTA
The personal data TMTA collects are names, addresses, emails and telephone numbers of Association members. It also holds bank account details for members paying by electronic funds transfer.
Data administration
The Chairperson acts as Data Protection Officer where necessary. The Membership Secretary of the Association is the primary data holder, and the primary contact for questions about personal data held by TMTA. The Treasurer is the holder of finance data such as bank account numbers of members paying electronically. Personal data is typically mastered in the form of spreadsheets on domestic personal computers owned by committee members, and subject to conventional domestic access controls.
Data sharing
The personal data held by TMTA is not shared outside the Association, other than as described below with France. It is fully available to the elected committee, and a list of contact information (names, addresses telephone numbers and emails) is shared with all members participating in group visits either as hosts or visitors. In preparation for twinning visits to and from France, the contact information of members participating is shared with the parallel association in France and through them to their members who are also participating. In return, TMTA and Association members receive similar information about the French participants.
Data retention
Personal data collected will be held as long as the data subject remains a member of the Association, and for up to a year afterwards, with such records being removed from active lists by the next membership renewal cycle. Backup copies may exist longer as part of regular system backups but will not be processed.
Data protection and the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)
In May 2018 a new data protection regulation comes into force – the GDPR from the European Union (EU GDPR Regulation). The GDPR includes the following rights for data subjects:
1. right to be informed
2. right of access
3. right to rectification
4. right to erasure
5. right to restrict processing
6. right to data portability
7. right to object
8. right not to be subject to automated decision-making including profiling
Of these, items 6 and 8 are not relevant to TMTA. For concerns about all other rights, members should contact the Membership Secretary who will instigate the appropriate process with the assistance of appropriate members of the committee.
Lawful basis for processing personal data
The GDPR sets out a set of lawful bases as the only allowable justifications for processing personal data. TMTA relies on ‘Legitimate Interest’, as the minimal personal data collected for annual membership is necessary for the functioning of the Association, and its use as described has little privacy impact on the data subjects.
In Memoriam . . .
Father Ken Rogers.
Father Ken Rogers passed away on February 12th 2019. His first visit to Morlaix was probably in about 1981 when he was a City Councillor and also chaplain to the Mayor, Andrew Treseder.
As well as being a priest he had wide interests, particularly cricket, and he enjoyed travelling. He had visited Morlaix within the past ten years, when he stayed with Catherine Paul.
Father Ken's funeral service took place on March 4th, in the (packed) Cathedral in Truro. Truro - Morlaix Twinning Association was mentioned during the service!
David Lawrence
The Committee and members of Truro-Pays de Morlaix Twinning Association are sorry to announce the death of David Lawrence on 19th August 2018, and we offer our sincere condolences to Sue and to their family.
David and Sue joined the Twinning Association in 1991 - the first organisation they joined after moving to Truro. They were quickly welcomed into the friendly group and over the years enjoyed many visits to Morlaix and hosting French Twinners to Truro.
David was on the committee for several years, in positions such as Vice Chairman and Acting Chairman.
Although less active more recently, Dave still enjoyed supporting social events, meeting up with old friends and seeing the Association flourish.

Murder Mystery Evening . . . - What the Butler Saw
Well ma dears, thank y’all for coming to our fun evening at Carnon Downs Village Hall. We enjoyed performing the mystery play and hope you found it entertaining. If you were somewhat mystified as to who the culprit was, - well that was intentional! We were delighted with all the fantastic costumes people came up with, and as for the imaginative names , they certainly caused many a chuckle. In case you didn’t get the opportunity to see them all, here are some that I can remember.
Dr. Freckle and Miss T. Fyde, Mr and Mrs Stan and Dee Liver, (the chauffeur) Onslow Roads, Eileen Dover, Grandfather Clock (dressed accordingly), (the retired burglar) Mrs Robyn Banks , Miss Ju(dith) Melage, Wing Co Buster Gutt and Sgt Major Bellow. I hope there were photos taken to remind us all of such an enjoyable evening.
Thank y’all again.

Twin-Link Newsletter is discontinued . . .
At a recent committee meeting it was decided that the present format of Twinlink is now past its 'use-by' date. Originally it was the only way of informing members of forthcoming events and involved expensive printing and postage costs. Now virtually everyone is on e-mail, and information can be e-mailed very quickly and cheaply.
Event information will be regularly emailed to members and also updated on the TMTA web-site.
